EMPOWERMENT FOR ALL THE FAMILY Evidence and recommendations

There is a wealth of evidence which shows the benefits of music for people living with Dementia, their carers and family. Listening to music together can empower family carers, strengthen connections, promote memory recall and provide a deeper understanding of the person behind the Dementia. Using meaningful music can provide social stimulation, foster creativity, improve cognitive function and help to manage the symptoms of Dementia.

WHEN AND WHY TO BEST ACTThe stages and what you can do

It is important that a person with early dementia is given the opportunity to do things for themselves and are supported to maintain their independence. Try to focus on what the person can do, not what they can no longer do.

Using meaningful familiar music can help to re-orientate, reduce anxiety and promote self-identity. Singing the person’s daily routine can help them remember certain tasks throughout the day for example.

Our Press Play to Rewind programme supports healthcare professionals and family carers to use meaningful music activities within their care of people living with dementia. We provide online and face to face training for care homes, as well as a support package for carers in the community. Press Play to Rewind also offers an accreditation package for care homes wishing to evidence the use of music within their daily care and to have the opportunity to become an accredited Press Play to Rewind setting, showing their stakeholders that they provide responsive, person centred care.
